Last January a mountain lion killed one of my adult llamas. A pair of young lions were seen behind my kids' school earlier, and the month or two prior lions were seen trotting through town with possums and domestic cats in their jaws. I called Animal Control and they sent out a trapper, we caught a female lion that night in a cage trap baited with part of the remains of my llama. My son was only 3 at the time and I had had a few of my baby llamas taken the summer before from a solid near my house, so I was concerned for our family and especially for my son.
They do not relocate lions in our area, apparently it is cruel to the lion and not a responsible choice for the new home area. The trapper humanely shot the lion- it was a beautiful animal. The paws and shoulder area were incredibly strong and muscular, the claws amazingly sharp. I would not want to imagine coming up against such a predator, especially by surprise as is the usual way. Be very aware and cautious if this animal is known to live in your area- they are becoming more and more acclimated to humans and beginning to consider them as prey. We live on 170 acres and back up to more wild country, so there is plenty of natural prey available, but they were going after the easy stuff.
