What to do about Neighbors Chickens....(Updated pg5)

Keep them, feed them and say nothing......if he should come round looking for his hens.....tell him they died or something ....its what I would do......they are lucky they found the way to your house safely.....

I doubt there is much to free range on since the weather we're having. I would keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary on them. You definitely dont want to bring in something that could cause harm to your own birds.

I'd also de-worm them asap if they are acting so starved. That may be why they are so hungry all the time. Maybe mix them up a treat with de-wormer in it and see if that if helps them improve. They may be eating plenty, just not benefiting from their own food.

I agree with many here. Keep them if you want. If you don't want to keep them, then lure them into your coop or a shed or something with feed and catch them all and take them to the Humane Society.

Thanks everyone for the infomation I went to speak to him today and I knew he was home and I knocked and Knocked but he never came to the door. I did as someone mentioned I gave them some wormer in a bucket of water I always keep out for them. They stay right here and even roosted lastnight on my side pourch have been for the past few nights. I talked to a family member that lives on a HUGE farm about taking them. He said yes so he will be coming to get them in a few days. The roo is gone this morning no where to be found so I dont know what happened to him.

It just makes me so mad if you dont want to care for something...SOMEONE ELES WILL. People get these animals and think they can fend for themselfs and they can't or they depend on someone eles to care for them. If this guy gets anymore chickens I am for sure going to file a complaint.

My chickens are silkies and cannot AT ALL fend for themselfs they are in runs because I could never let them out or his dog would kill them in mins. I have let the older ones out when I am outside. I am there big rooster watching out for them..LOL

I never let my younger ones out because they just seem to not listen and I am afriad his dog will kill them.

So I hope this is a happy ending for these 3 that are left. I hope the rooster turns up soon. I fear he may have been killed or caged because he sees there is a problem because I came to his door today.

Don't get mad at this, but

................ I am in a rural area too, and one thing we learned was to NEVER feed someone else's animals. They won't leave and they keep coming back. I know that it may sound cruel, but you created the problem by feeding them. It is sad that they are in poor shape, but taking them is wrong too. I don't think that is a good idea, it is also against the law. If you can't work it out with the guy, then you have 2 choices, call animal control or drop the issue and stop feeding them. They have been trained to come to you.

I know that my opinion is not going to be popular, however, I feel I needed to share it. I feel strongly about not feeding other peoples animals. We have 20 acres, so the neighbors are not too far away. In the past we have had many dogs. I don't believe in having dogs cooped up in a run, on leash, on cable run, shocked by a radio fence, and certainly not stuck in an apartment. We have always trained the dogs to stay home. We made it clear to all of our neighbors to NEVER feed our dogs and we will do the same for them. Its amazing, word spread and now all of the people around us adopted the same policy, there are hardly ever stray dogs. When people feed stray dogs, its over, the dog will ALWAYS come back to get fed.

I know you think that your opinion is going to get you a lot of heat here G Wiz Ranch, but I completely agree with you. It is theft and it is illegal to just take the chickens or give them away, and whoever you give them to would be prosecutable under knowingly accepting stolen property.

You made an attempt to correct the situation by feeding the chickens and talking to the owner. I suggest to make one more step since he refused to open the door and leave a letter or mail one to him. If there is still nothing done, call animal control/the humane society and report your suspicions. They will take over and investigate the situation and deal with it legally. Don't risk legal action over this.

So I know he wont speak to my face to face so I left him a note in his car this afternoon. So we shall see how the outcome comes of this and I hope its in a good way. I have to big of a heart to turn my head to any animal and yes its my fault. I couldnt sleep at night if I turned my back on anything that was starving. It would be a different matter if they were well fed chickens I'd would have never done it but I knew better. I am sorry if I have offended anyone with this matter. I would never steal someones pets and maybe I did bring this problem upon myself but any decent person with a heart could not turn around and walk away without feeding a starved animal.
