..no way i'd pay him fair market value for hens i had to feed, to keep them from starving!...i would offer to take them off his hands though..and maybe pay him like $3 a bird...what chicks cost...

LOL, I didnt offer a price in my letter I just said I'd buy them if he would let me because I wanted to resolve this problem fast. That he wouldnt speak to me so I didnt know what to think and the birds have been at my house for 3 weeks and I have been caring for them. The thing If he wants his birds he has to come to my house cause they never leave my property. So Maybe if he decides he does not want to lose his birds or get into any trouble I will be able to talk to him face to face.

right!...you have been feeding them..BECAUSE they were starving!..i would not pay him much at all....maybe what a chick would cost...thats it...good luck! and thanks for helping them!

I am not sure why you think this is funny. I don't

The point was not the "value" of the bird. The point is to entice him to give up on them so she could "save" them. What is the incentive to him to give them away or sell them cheap. Make an offer to take them off his hands and he is likely to lock them up or destroy them to prove a point.

Red Hen- I think you are missing the point and not seeing the big picture. She has no "right" to feed, keep or care for the birds. It is her opinion (I don't dissagree with her, I am sure she is right) about the birds condition, that is why I say get the authorities involved.

You think it is justified to steal, and I do not

. You think it is ok to harbor strays, I do not

. You think it is "wise" to feed strays, I do not

.

I have dealt with people that treat animals poorly and I have assisted in horse, mule and donkey rescues. The ONLY way to handle it is with the LAW on your side.

No more from me on this issue.

Bless you for taking these poor things in. However, please do isolate them and when they calm down, check them out thoroughly.

I kept a roo I found on my property and put him in a dog kennel for a week. i feed him, watered him and kept him warm during a horrid ice storm. I let him out a few days ago and he made his rounds with the other roos. He did not go into the barn and I do not know where he is this night. I did not see him today. I know he is well fed and he is getting plenty of water, the ice melted.

I figure all you can do is be kind to these critters and hope for the best for them. However, it is important to keep the integrity of your flock. I felt ok about isolating this roo and he really needed a week of food and water. I have a terrible soft spot for roos.

i figure if he is here tomorrow, he will be here another day and maybe he will finally become a part of my flock. Until them, he is free to go.

its a great thing that your going to take them or ask the neighbor for them i dont really think you have to because like a said before position is 9/10th of the law and your feeding them and taking care of them so i really believe they belong to you now and if you dont want to take them you could always go to his house ask him for the chickens and if he says no then you need to tell him your calling the police well good luck again and what ever you do should be the right decision on your part

i can't believe the turn this thread took since this morning. Teresaann24, you are a saint and a kind-hearted person. i know you don't want to "get into trouble" and it sure sounds like you are going above and beyond what any rational reasonable person would do to try to resolve this issue as amicably as possible. BUT, bottom line is the safety and health of those poor birds. If someone does not want their animals fed by others then they need to keep those critters on their own property. Any starving creature comes to my door, they are getting a big plate of food - period.

But seriously, law enforcement has better things to do than police people not feeding their chickens. And in the time it takes to get the law involved those birds could be dead. Bless you, Teresaann24, for erring on the side of compassion.

I think you have been wonderfully kind to the birds and I hope you continue. Many of us tend the feral cats here, it's such a sad situation. We also get large numbers of drop-offs from the city- poor confused, former pets. So long as you quarantine the animals to protect yours, they sure seem like drop-offs to me. Maybe they are! The thing is, they exist and they came to you. With the economy in chaos we'll see more animals in need, bless you for your good heart and kind ways.

STEALING?

When someone's pet wanders on to my yard and it has been abused or neglected, getting it the care it needs is not STEALING.

Sneaking on to someone's property and removing their animals...now THAT is stealing.

Guess what? If the animal was abused or neglected, I would do that too.
