What to do - pip but not zipping

So sorry. See if the chick had any deformities. Sometimes it happens and you just never know why. In the future if you are around during hatch and notice that it started to zip, like yours did, but no progress after an hour or so, pull it out and see what’s going on. Once they are zipping all the blood (veins) and yolk are absorbed so don’t be afraid to offer help at that point.

thanks, I looked it over after and didn’t see anything else. Anything to prevent malpositoning? I stopped turning them at 18 days

Agree with the RubyNala, once they start a full zip, an hour total is about my maximum. They may stop for a few minutes between turns, but once they start, they should continue. Some breeds tend to be worse about starting and stopping than others.

Another thing along that line is skipping sections of shell while zipping. They shouldn’t miss spots, it should be a nice clean zip. But if random spaces get missed, they could have trouble once they get around. I usually pull the cap off those too, then let the chick finish pushing out.

I’m paranoid now. This one pipped this morning but the membrane is still intact. Leave it alone? Or should I help poke through the membrane? I had been leaving them all alone. Keeping it nice and humid

I would probably very carefully poke a hole in the membrane....A tiny hole...very carefully.

That’s a nice break in the shell. Even though the membrane may appear to not be broken, they can’t break the shell that much without piercing the membrane. If you watch closely (I even use a magnifying glass lol) you can watch a flap open and close. Or at least hoove up a bit. It should be fine.
