What to do when the predator is a person?

My parents let thier birds free range 24/7. They stay in the yard most of the time but do go accross the road into the weeds. My dad mows along the side of the road and they like to hang out there. They have had a bird (chicken or duck) get hit every once in awhile but nothing like yesterday. Someone drove off the road and hit 6 of thier ducks. 5 of them were killed and one is so bad that I doubt if it makes it through the day. My parents left for Texas last Friday for the Paint Horse World show and won't be back till Sunday. They are pretty sure they know who did it because they have alot of problems out of this guy. Of course they can't prove anything since they are gone. Does anyone have any ideas what they should do to A.) prevent this B.) do something about it

That was a low down, brutal, stupid, cruel thing to do! The person who did it is a jerk and an idiot. I don't know what the argument is between your folks and this person, but even if his side of the argument is right or has merit, he didn't have a right to deliberately kill the ducks like that.

But even if your folks are "pretty sure" who did the deed, "pretty sure" isn't good enough, because it might have been some drunk on a joy ride.

And you have a real problem if you didn't see it happen. The only thing you can do to truly protect your birds is to keep them at home.

Fence for the ducks? Or game camera to catch the guy in the act and stick it to him!

About the only thing you can do is contain your birds. If you catch the guy in the act and report him you should be able to get damages AND he'll likely face animal cruelty charges. That's only if it can be proved that he went off the road after them though. If they're on the road it would be really hard to prove intent. Sorry for your loss, sometimes people....#%$

Report it to the police, is there any tire tracks? They may be able to match with the guy who you think it is. Game camera or some other form of video.

I was thinking more in terms if leg traps, spike strips, a land mine...something as sweet as "it" deliberately killing the ducks...

I'm sure they aren't going to fence to where the ducks can't get out they have 2 acres and that's alot of $$$$ the ducks can fly so it'd have to be a really tall fence. Let's say this guy is messed up in head, he ramed my truck one night on purpose with people standing right there. He took off and his reasoning is "I owe him $$ for pigs" from when I was 13 or 14. They have a came in the barn where the horses are. It happened during the day and being from a really small area they will find out because he will say something and it will get back to them. I just feel that if he has a problem he should be a man and step up and not just run over the animals. It's not thier fault.
