What treat did your chickies get today?

I chocolate "good" for chickens?  I was always told it was very bad for cats and dogs, so I made the assumption it, too, would be bad for other animals, but I see I could be incorrect.  Do you often give chocolate whatever?  No side effects?

It was a small piece, leftover from dessert. It wasn't enough to harm them, since I have 26 chickens, 4 ducks, and a goose all trying to get the goodies! And no, they get chocolate rarely.

Went out this morning for my standard grape feeding which they all love, and when done they started scratching around me in my chair. What really surprised me was two of the girls got chased by a single bee, I have 6 hives, and they were 25 feet further away from the hives than I was!

OK....then I won't feel bad when I have a little chocolate dessert left and toss it to the hens. Just wondering if anyone really knows if chocolate is "bad" like for dogs for the hens. I really try to limit sugars and all, but when there is a small bit of cake or cookies, I go for it with them, but as you say....lots of them fighting over it makes it very little for all. Enjoy the flock!

More cicadas! They are in the brush, on the trees, under the trees , and on the tall grass. Today they were flying around too. I saw one chicken jump up and grab one out of the air! They are everywhere ! The noisy, orange and black creatures. My chickens can just stand in one spot and gorge themselves!

Our girls got squash & zucchini (which they loved), strawberries, carrots & beets (did not like) and spinach (mixed reviews).

That is in addition to their scratch and mealies.

They have also decided that treats are not worth eating unless it comes directly from my hand. They wouldn't touch the squash or zucchini on the ground, but when I was holding it for them, everyone wanted it. :)

Biscuits, gravy, scrambled eggs, spaghetti from last night, hot dog buns and hamburger buns, plus their usual corn and layer pellets. I have extremely spoiled birds! If I go into the coop without treats, they peck at my feet!

Leftover eggs n toast from breakfast, strawberry tops and watermelon. Only the rooster ate the watermelon. Lol

One year, we had a lot of watermelon and I really wanted the chickens to share in them as a treat, but also as an extra food source. I finally ended up chopping the rind and skins in my processor and they loved them! After a week or so, I didn't need to chop any longer and if I put in a large piece with skin and rind, they'd attack it and what was left a few hour only was a paper-thin shell with skin! A friend puts 1/4 of a melon on a hanging basket and you should see the fun and exercise they get having at it.
Great thread to see what other chicken folks give as treats. Makes me feel maybe my hens aren't quite as spoiled as some folks tell me they are, but rather very much loved and have trained me well!
