Every morning as I'm going to let my chickens out for the day, I grab a handful of dandelion greens, chickweed, clover, garden lettuce, spinach, chamomile and/or broccoli greens to cut up for my chickie babies! I found out if I don't present them with this first thing, they go back into their coop and sulk! If I give it to them, they stay out for the day. I also give them occasional oats, chopped hard-boiled eggs, bird seed or finely chopped carrots and, rarely, ground wheat bread.

My wonderful, tolerant husband transformed our tack room/horse stalls into a coop/storage with the stalls becoming a fence-enclosed outside area so they can get fresh air even when it rains. He also built an A-frame portable pen! We live on almost two acres in rural Kansas with our two year old miniature Australian shepherd and 11 chickens: 2 silver-laced Wyandottes, 3 barred rocks and 2 buff orpingtons, all around 12 weeks old and 4 younger chickens that I hope to soon integrate in with the older flock: 2 buff orpingtons and 2 New Hampshire reds. We have two grown children, a son & daughter. We have 3 precious and onery grandsons.
