What treat did your chickies get today?

The way I look at it is chickens are omnivores. They can and will eat just about anything- greens, fruit, bugs, worms, etc. And the meat scraps I can't compost because they could attract scavengers, so the chickens are a good "recycling" machine for those. But as long as yours are getting the protein they need- and if they have a good brand of feed, they will- if you are not comfortable with feeding them meat, there's no harm done. The stuff we give them is supposed to be supplemental to their feed, anyway.

My rooster who is recovering from a turkey attack got stone fish leftover from lunch and some sunflower seeds

Yesterday I made stir fried leftover white rice with lots of chopped up seaweed, ground up dried sardines, ground up gardenia seed pods and venison fat. I served it over kabocha (a Japanese winter squash).

Today they just got regular feed. They get annoyed with me on non-treat days.

My wee ones got their first meal worms today. It was awesome watching them figure out how to eat them. Then the first one to figure it out was being a little piggy and not letting the others have a go. They are so fun.

I do not feed mine treats to often only because at my house their is not much leftovers after they eat.
but today they got some pancakes left over from dinner the other night. Had to hide them from the rest of the family. And everyday when we feed the pigs, cow and horses they go and eat their feed. I think they think they are helping and they are not LOL>

Tomorrow they will get rice, maybe some eggs if I have enough.. My hens have just started laying. Need to figure out who is laying what. got a nice brown one on the dark side with some small speckles on it.

might be from one of my reds.

My chooks got fresh, green weeds that I pulled from the garden beds as I ready them for spring planting!

They were so happy -- other than left over salad from the dinner table and the alfalfa that a friend gave me, my chickens have not had greens since the first hard freeze back last December.

It's almost springtime!
