What would you do? DEED DONE..

The starter fluid should contain Ether. It may take as much as 20 min depending on the size of the bird. A young chick dies in a couple of minutes, I put down a 2 year old sick hen a few week ago and it took about 5 minutes. It depends on you and how you hold the cloth to the nose. She can't get any other air.

Ok the deed has been done....

A friend of mine (also city slicker but has more guts then me) came over to help. After throwing around how we would do it we found an old Ax that was really sharp in the back of my garage! We decided old fashioned way! Why not right? I need to learn how to be the country girl I want to be right? So I stretched the neck out on the ground and she whacked at em'. We did all of my flock, I didn't want to take chances of any more being sick. We were both afraid of the flopping thing because neither of us has seen it in real life, but after seeing the first...then second..then third.... It was no big deal anymore. In fact, some next door neighbor boys came over to watch us! Kids are so fascinated with weird things...especially boys! I tried to keep my son inside but he looked out the window and saw what we did and ran out asking why we were killing all the chickens, so I has to explain the best I could to a 5 year old without him thinking he can kill every sick thing! Thanks BYC members for your support! I have learned a great lesson, and from now on will only buy either Hatching Eggs or Chicks from My favorite hatchery Ideal. Again Thank you for the support.

How Do I sanitize my whole coop area?? What is the best thing to use? And how long before I can put chickens in it again?? I think I am going to focus on one Breed this time.... I think it is barely hitting me that they are all really gone.....

Oh, hon, I'm so sorry, but you were a real trooper! Some would see it as extreme, to cull the entire flock, but this way, you know. You are an official country girl, I'd say. (((hugs)))
Oxine is really the very best thing. Bleach would be my next choice. If it was cocci, I'd say use old fashioned ammonia, but bleach will do. Not sure exactly how long you should wait, but since it will take awhile to get up your flock again, however long it is should be enough. If I can help rebuild by sending hatching eggs, I'll be happy to do that. You probably know I raise Barred Plymouth Rocks and could provide crosses with BR as sire.

You are absolutely Wonderful for your offer!

If it is not too much trouble I would love some eggs! (I've never received shipped eggs before, that would be an experience all on its own)! As of tomorrow morning I am bleaching everything down since that is what I have on hand at the moment... Are your BR very docile?? I was going to look for Delaware Eggs since Ideal says they are out of them, and If I can find Delaware Eggs it would be great to incubate all the Eggs together. So I am off to search for my Delawares.... Again, Thank you...

Oh yeah, After my friend and I were done we looked at each other and said what a waste of meat....I think we can do meat birds in no time!

Ok, then, Lanissa, I'll be glad to send you some in a couple of weeks. I have one more customer to collect for and mail out next Saturday, then I could collect some for you, if you want to go ahead with that. That is, if you like Barred Rocks. Too bad my Delawares are just 9 weeks old or I could send you some of those too! These are from a breeder of exhibition-type, real heritage Delawares, so they are spectacular birds.
My Barred Rocks are wonderful. They are curious, friendly, sweet and great layers to boot. They are my favorite birds!

Oh, my goodness! Thank you so much for posting the update. See, we ALL have a little country girl in us!

I have copied this thread to my "chicken" folder so that when the day comes that I have to cull one of my girls I'll have some inspiration.

Isn't it funny how we can be proud of total strangers? Yup, you made me proud!

Lanissa-you have become a "tough old bird" in a hurry!
Lime is very cheap and effective too-I would throw some of that around also.
Go have a nice "city" glass of wine and take care of yourself.
