I was wanting to order a pair of adult American Blue geese from Holderreads this fall. They are the only place that has this breed.

This spring I ordered 2 eggs from a fellow BYC member, one of which hatched. I was going to get more eggs and was unable to. So earlier this summer, the plan was to get some goslings from Holderreads, which also fell through. So I figured I'd get adults, since the one I have will be a year old already by the time I can get more (goslings) next spring.

Shipping is $134.40 per pair, plus $25 per box (I assume I would need 2?)

The birds themselves range from $100 for utility grade birds, up to $300 for show quality.

So just for a pair of utility birds it would cost me almost $300!!! Is it worth it? Would you pay that? Or should I just wait till spring and get some babies?

(If this should be in the goose forum, feel free to move it

Yeah, I had no idea that the shipping was that much. The goslings aren't much cheaper per bird than the adults are, but they sure are cheaper to ship!

Unless you can make some serious money off of them and guarantee that nothing eats them.. i wouldnt do it.

The bolded part was my first thought. I'd spend that and they'd be eaten in the first week.

I would have to get little ones or get more eggs. I only paid $500 for my truck, and I can drive it!!!! I know how you feel, I want some new chickens and ducks, but I don't have the money to get the ones I want. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Ohhh, I thought the Coronation Sussex I wanted were high! Wowwee...

I'm working with this same issue with Pencil Red Turkeys as I have a tom but no hens, 2 hens shipped will end up $25 for box $25 for shipping and then their price....at very young age. Think it's the eggs for me.

I've just got to hold back.... If I cannot swap for eggs. I cannot do it right now.

I'm so happy because I was able to get a good used Dell computer for my sweet mother in law to replace the one we bought her almost 6 years ago. She's such a sweet mother and raises a disabled adult relative and so good to the world. The library owned the computer and it's in outstandng shape...Actually much better than the one we use at home. How blessed were we to see it on the sale table!

Be blessed and be a blessing!

I ASSUME you have the money available or you would not have asked if you should get them.

How much do you want them? Are you willing to risk losing the money if something happens to them. Hummm, wonder if there is insurance for geese? LOL

From a business point of view - if they are still so rare as to command that kind of prices, if you get a guaranteed 'pair' then in a few months, if all goes well, you could be selling the high dollar eggs or goslings or adding more rare geese to your flock. If all goes well, you could recoup your money plus make some extra in a rather short time, If all goes well. LOL

Do you have really secure housing for them?

Another thought - depending on how much the eggs are costing you, plus shipping and the unknown of if they will hatch. That adds up. Getting goslings, there is the unknown sex and quality factor going on also. Plus a year before they start producing eggs. If all goes well......

The blue american geese are soooo pretty. If I had the money available I would sure be trying to figure if I should get some also.

I know he is not like what you are considering, but I think I will look at my gray gander a bit different now. LOL He is a rather pretty guy and only cost me $10.
