Take care of yourself, Bea! It is easy to get caught up in the caregiving for everyone else, but if you wind up hospitalized you can't help anyone including yourself.

We had a chicken tragedy this morning... My dogs have been really good with the chickens lately. I have been going out to do chores in the morning and letting the whole pack into the barn where my young Spitzhauben crosses and my 3 young EE's hang out. They have been interested, but call off of them really easily. Once or twice, when a chicken really runs from them or makes a fuss, they will chase it a bit, but still come right back to me as soon as I call them.

This morning, I left the barn chores for the kids because I had to get to work. 3 of the dogs ganged up on one of my original black Australorps and did too much damage before the kids could stop them. She died in my daughter's arms. She is devastated... I'm probably going to have to have a chicken funeral when I get home. I don't think there is any way I could convince my kids to let me cook this bird. Not sure I would want to either. Her name was Sisu... She was a good girl...

It's not their fault, really. As I said, I have a pack.., 7 dogs. They all view me as a strong pack leader, but not so much with the kids. They are all great dogs, but when pack mentality takes over and the pack leader isn't there to stop them... I can't blame them for being dogs. For the ready of the summer, the kids can only have 1 or 2 dogs out at a time. 7 is a bit much for them to keep under control.

I just got home and looked over the chicken the dogs killed. My DD said they were pushing her out of a shed when she found them. She has 3 really superficial marks on her back. Not really even full thickness bite wounds... And that is it... Could she have died of a heart attack for being scared?? Her injuries just don't seem severe enough to have killed her. She was still alive when my DD found her, but gasping...
