Is there anything that can be done when the aircell is messed up from shipping? I hardly ever get a live chick from eggs with detached air cells. The chick will grow but around lock down it dies. Any suggestions? Lock down is the 23rd.

"Is the air cell still moving around or not? If it's not moving and it's just slightly off center it shouldn't have much lower odds of hatching. I've had some hatch that the air cell ended up directly on the side of the egg and I've had some chicks hatch that didn't bother to pip the air cell but broke straight through the shell. When it comes time to stop turning I just try to set the off center ones where the air cell will be towards the top.

If it's still moving I would keep that egg upright possibly even through hatch. Either keep it in a turner or set it in a carton. The air cell may still settle and stop moving. If possible you want it at the top when it does. If it continues to move up to hatching time then you still want to keep it at the top and leaving the egg upright sometimes helps the chicks position to break up into the air cell. There is some increased risk with losing down pips though."

I think UncleTommy said he leaves his in an egg carton to hatch, too. I've never tried that, but willing to this time, anyone else wanna help?

My guess and only a guess would be to hatch in an upright position. (Like in an egg carton). I have never tried it but it should put the air sac to the top where it normally is. Just a guess though.

Patricia, I picked my eggs up today and they are already in the incubator! The mailman gave me heck about it... said that "they've been here for some time", to which I replied, "Then where is my pink slip?" They were delivered to PO Friday, and I don't get anything in the mailbox until Saturday when the PO is closed. Go figure. I guess I shouldn't complain... they didn't smash any of these at least!

Thanks for labeling them, too. That will be very helpful. I'll let you know how they're doing!

Ditto, ladies! As much as he complains about the chickens, I think he secretly loves them. Like when he bought me a new coop and put a great fence around it... I let them out before he could get home and he was all bummed because he wanted to see them enjoying their new digs. We also butchered this weekend, and he (the farm boy who grew up around this stuff!) couldn't watch/participate. I think he's getting sensitive! lol!

I was planning to try just leaving them in the turner and shutting it off instead of transferring them to the hatcher. I really need several of these polish to hatch. Apparently I made a good guess. I'm gonna give it a try and see how well it goes. I may just be using cartons on lock down when I have more air cells like this. I know no matter how hard we try to ship eggs without getting damaged the po manages to damage them anyway.

Not to stick up for those where you got the eggs but if the eggs went thru a usps location where they were x-rayed that could add to their "exploding" tendency.

And yes you pack eggs very well and despite that the PO still managed to crush one of the cochin eggs I received today.
