So, question. DH has been growing black solider flies ( he wanted this for his birthday present, they grow then weird in socal) He has devised a way to get the things to lay into cardboard that could be shipped. If I actually made a swap page, would people be interested in black solider fly kits that had eggs, maybe grubs, and directions on how to make the bucket? I'm not sending buckets, lol.

They have really helped with the fly problem and they chow down on poo so its easy to keep their bucket primed for the grubs to grow. Plus they are great chicken treats. ( you are better off feeding them a different animal poo if you want to feed them to chickens however, we feed ours quail poo and table scraps and compost the chicken poo.)

I know I was trying to get the meal worm starter kits when they were up, so I thought some people might like this.

LOL that is kinda a funny mental picture eh.
Well finnaly got the baby to eat a little more then one or two specs of crushed up crumble. Hopefully vannila non fat yogurt wont hurt her.
Butter has to be one of the cutest things I have ever seen .. I hope she makes it.

For best results; DON"T wait to do her feet. I found this to help you. http://professorchickensdiseases.webs.com/deformities.htm . If you can't open it and view let me know. They also need a certain amount of grit to what they eat to help scrape out (for lack of a better way of putting it.) I have used organic oatmeal for the first few days. You can grind it, but not to powder, just gritty. I add flax, but that is not always available. If you really have to you can mix crumble with warm water, and a syringe, after cooling. For the first few days the most important thing is that it is drinking. I had to put the one little one up to the quail feeder all the time and could hardly leave the house for a little while there. Do feet (toes) right away for quick healing.
I am pulling for the little guy... Go Butter!!!!!

It would be MUCH better for her if you used plain, unflavored, unsweetened yogurt.

I understand, and it is not an easy task to start with; no bird wants to be restrained. I can't find the video of us doing, so I'm sending pics of happy eggs your way. I always say, "happy chickens make happy eggs." My hubby said that it was because I draw happy faces on all of them.

It looks like I will have to lay off the swap for a little bit. We had a terrible thunderstorm roll through Saturday night. It blew water into my brooder box, which was under the barn shelter about 4-5 feet from the opening, and I lost nearly half of the chicks in there. Half of my heritage barred rock chicks didn't make it. The wind was so strong it also blew the roof off my goat shelter and part of the wall is collapsed. I think we're going to have to drag our big chicken coop out in the pasture so they can have somewhere to get out of the rain until we can get it rebuilt. All of my extra money is going towards that project now. I hope to be able to participate in the swap in the future.
