whats a good breed for cold places?

Wyandottes with a rose comb I think are best especially the roos. I have several breeds that are cold hardy but always have to put vaseline on the single comb roos so they don't get frostbite. Our winters here it is not uncommon to have -20F to -30F degree weather, not including the wind chill. Wyandottes are a duel purpose breed and are good layers.
I like the idea of wuandottes, might want to get some ameracanas too. I think blue eggs would be fun. thanks folks!

The Chantecler is one of the most cold-hardy breeds, as it was bred in Canada for cold weather. It is a dual-purpose (eggs and meat) breed. There are several color varieties.

The Sand Hill Preservation Center in Iowa sells Chanteclers. http://www.sandhillpreservation.com/

Ideal Poultry in Texas also sells Chanteclers. http://www.idealpoultry.com/assortment.html

Definitely buy breeder quality birds if you want meat. THe hatchery birds that I have had lack in the breast area. Maybe there are poultry shows in your area, or a poultry club. COntact the show secretary when you have determined a breed or two. The club secretaries know everyone.

I live in NEw England, and I am giving up on single combed birds. THe rose combs and the pea combs do just fine here NOT the single combs.

I have all the breeds listed on my signature, and I have not lost any yet, even at -45 without heat. The rooster has got a bit of frostbite on his comb now, though. Try to get breeds with rose, pea or cushion combs. This RIR will go next year, even if it looks good, his comb is way too big!
P.S. I really like your signature!

I LOVE my chanteclers! just all-around wonderfull, and THE MOST cold-hardy. Meyer Hatchery sell the Buff variety, and I plan on buying some roos from them so I can start breeding and selling Chanteclers.

Our Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, and Australorp think that 0F at 7am is a perfect time to exit the coop and start another long day of scratching around. They also don't seem to mind those -10F nights without heat in their coop. I've been impressed with their ability to carry on in our harsh climate.
