What's A Good Small Lapdog?

Some dogs are more prone to yap, but I think alot of yapping is lack of socialization and training. I don't own small dogs nor have I ever But the caviliar King Charles Spaniel was apparenty bred specificially to be a lap dog. Plus I think they are adorable. Seems a CKCS was bred for decades specifically for the purpose you are looking for.

Good luck in your search.

I can't tell you what breed to get, but I can tell you one breed not to get. I wouldn't trust 99.99% of dachshunds with a bunny. Dachshunds hunt bunnies. I've had dachshunds all my life, bred them, showed them, think they're the best breed on earth, but I wouldn't trust them with a pet bunny.

Your best bet is to go to a local rescue that deal with smaller dogs and let them know what you want.......most keep dogs in foster homes and will have an idea of their personality.

I am a "big dog person" but ended up with a little toy poodle. She is not my cup of tea, at all. But she doesn't bother the other animals, is relatively quiet, likes everybody, etc. She is older, so playing isnt really her thing but every now and then she will run around the house for a minute. She mostly just sits in her bed.

Here are things to consider. Do you want to deal with grooming? If no, that takes out Poodle, Shihtzu, Lhasa, Cockapoo and associated mixes. You would probably do well to look for some sort of mixed breed 20-30lb dog. Those are a dime a dozen and seem to get more of a "big dog" personality than the little "foo foo" dogs.

It can depend on the individual dog, BUT if you look into the right breed to start with your chances will be higher of finding that dog. In AKC, the group to check is Non-Sporting, in UKC it is called Companion Dog, and that is because that is the main purpose for most of the dogs in those categories. Bred to be companion dogs. For small dogs you will find, depending on if it is AKC or UKC, shih tzu, pug, boston terrier, bichon frise, cavalier king charles spaniel, maltese and papillion all of which would be good for your life style. Yorkies would be an individual thing. So can be yappy and have a high prey drive, others not so much. I am sure there are others, those are just off the top of my head.

if you are looking for something to fit all those characteristics i would get a hybird dog. there are many to choose from like malti-poos, yorkie-poo, puggle, labradoodle ( although they are a bit bigger) and many many others. my grandma has a peke-poo which is a pekingnese poodle hybrid. she is very a very small lapdog but she does yap especially when someone knocks on the door although that may be a good thing for my grandma because the dog is very protective. Good luck and by the way this dog is a medium sized dog so i dont know if you would like this a lot but my fav. dog breed is a boykin spaniel. they are very loving and low maintenence they love to play with u but they also love to relax with u anytime you want. They are very good about not barking unless its an emergency. haha and u gotta admit those curly brown ears are adorable

o and one more thing many small dog that weigh like under 12 pounds have A LOT OF HEALTH PROBLEMS. u will be spending a lot of money on things that bigger dogs wont get. so it sounds to me like a medium sized laid back spaniel is the dog you are looking for. i like to reccomend boykin spaniels....

i know some people who have papillions but like i said they need to be groomed A LOT. and they also have a lot of health problems. i think they are good with the barking though.

I have been a hound and large dog person all of my life. Recently my daughter got a pug through a rescue group. He is the neatest, most personable, intelligent little dog that I have ever been around. In spite of some serious health issues, he is an upbeat, cheerful, funny little dog with no personality or temperment drawbacks. If we outlive our present dog ( a golden), my wife and I have decided that a pug is in our future. If you have any interest, research the breed and select from a good breeder with all health checks.

I again am not a small dog person "if you going to have a dog have one not a dish mop" appologies to all of you who have one. If you are just wanting something to decorate your home and sit in your lap stick to your cats. ALL dogs NEED training, exercise and socialization with people and other animals. As for picking it up WHY would you want to do that a dog has 4 legs for a reason. My gripe with this action is that whenever i have been out with my reasonably trained border collie and a small dog has been loose on the park it has raced over yapping and snarling at my dog on the lead and when hes reacted nearly yanking my arm off the other dogs owner has dashed over scooped up her or his dog and told ME with dog on lead to keep my dog under control when theres has obviously not been trained, instead it has been picked up and loved rewarding its antisocial behavior both towards other dogs and people.

So please keep looking into what breed is best for you temprement wise but also remember training is vital to maintain any dogs temprement and behavior and dont please substitue picking it up out of situations instead of training it not to get into them.

I know im lumping small dog folk together and most are responsible owners but where i live it seems to be the attitude i have met over years of dog walking both BC's and golden retreivers.
