What's so special about Silkies? [got them!]

Congratulations! I have always found that some of the roosters can be identified as chicks when they look at you in a challenging way. So the ones that come up to you and make eye contact- I'd avoid those.

You can put a mirror in the brooder and a stuffed animal or feather duster for it to snuggle with.

To address the original question: I love silkies because they are so polite to each other. They don't push each other out of the way to get in the coop. "No, you first- no, you first!"

They are so laid back and docile. Breeder silkies tend to be more docile than hatchery silkies, though, I have found.

They hardly poo at all compared to my large fowl and even some bantams! In the coop at night I mean.

They snuggle with each other.

I saw somewhere that if you feel their foreheads, boys will have a little bump.

I can't remember where I saw that at though.

What kind of stuffed animal? Like a teddy bear, or does it need something more fluffy?
What about the CD? I've seen people put them in with chicks before. What do they do?

Sorry I don't know anything further than what I told you about brooding a lone chick, since I only know it from reading many BYC posts.

I just have to add, even though you've decided to get one, that I don't think OTHER PEOPLE'S silkies are cute, but I think mine is adorable- so they're kind of like kids that way:) So I'll bet yours will win you over.

That's fine. Thank you.

Yeah, probably.
I kinda want a white one. And I want it to get really fluffy.

But I guess that I'll take whatever color the place orders for me. I didn't even think to tell them I wanted a specific color.
When the lady calls me about it I might ask if that can be done.

Hah, they're going to hate me.
Not only are they going to order just one chick for me, I asked if I could pay more to make sure it was a pullet, and now I want a specific color.

I don't think so..I guess I can do a little bit of snooping around the site to see.
Not many people are from Indiana on here..
Plus my boyfriend wants to raise it. He wants to make sure it likes him.

I've never been a fan - altho I recently heard about their medicinal qualities which intrigue me. More pertinent to what happens in my life however ... my son has decided he would like some (cuckoo, splash or blue) so I imagine it is now only a matter of time ...

I also would prefer to have the large fowl variety. I've heard some people have been working on large fowl that retain the medicinal qualities???

I actually went to the Silkie thread and saw you on there. Only problem is that you're almost 2 and a half hours away from me.
With gas prices the way that they are, I don't know if I'm willing to drive that far for a Silkie when I can order one and pay maybe 10 dollars to just drive five minutes to pick it up..
