What's the dif between Dominiques and Barred Rocks?

Holy crap that BR roo is stunning! Is he yours? I am partial to the Rose comb. I love my RC RIR hen.

ETA: Those roos are not mine.

Good to know. There's pet quality, better, still better, then exhibition quality of all these. Since most people must start with hatchery stock, it's encouraging that they can be improved upon that way. This rooster came out of my hatchery Hawkeye with one of the daughters of that utility BR roo that herechickchick posted. He was owned by FrontPorchIndiana, who hatched him from my eggs. Maybe not show quality, but I was impressed, considering his parentage. So, I do know from experience that you can breed a chick that will grow up to be more than his parentage.

Don't Doms have a more "swaybacked" appearance than BRs? It always seemed that they did to me.

speckledhen, I have never seen Hawkeye before but I am truly amazed!

The barring is MUCH better than the hatchery birds. Keep up the good work!

On a side note, try going for the larger body size too, they'll still weight about the same, but the whole "square" that us Americans like...well ya know.

I am absolutely amazed You keep up that good work!

Hawkeye had terrible messy barring, but he had the broad body I like to shoot for. And most of the girls I have are big, hefty girls, too. Thank you for the compliment! Means alot to me. My current flock rooster is Dutch, also Hawkeye's son. His barring is better than his daddy's, but not as good as FrontPorchIndiana's Bob turned out to be. That's what I like to see, that crisp, fine barring.

Sorry to the OP! Didn't mean to do this mini-hijack of your thread! The rose comb in the Doms would be the most obvious difference in the two breeds. Body type is supposed to be different as well, but the comb is the thing most of us look for.

We have Doms and love them. They have no heat in their coop and this winter was bitter cold. A few days had wind chills in the negative 20's. There were three total days (not in a row) that none of my hens laid an egg. The coop is very tight so they didn't get drafts and seemed happy all winter. The rose combs keep them from getting frost bite very bad - one roo got a little frost bite. He likes to dip his head in the fresh water and splash with his beak ... bad game in the winter! They are very friendly ...... sometimes to the point of being a pest! If you lean down one will fly up and land on your back and commence preening your hair or hood. They jump up in your lap and camp there. And they love to be under your feet chatting to you when you are gathering eggs. And right now out of 13 hens we get 13 eggs a day.

Oh god, herechickchick, I WISH that standard BR roo was mine! /img/smilies/tongue.png I have bantams! Here's my BANTAM barred rock cockerel, Fabio 2.0, with a couple of his other breed gfs!
