I arrived in Sydney yesterday, and promptly, less than an hour after my plane touched down, the heavens opened. It's been raining ever since. I predict long day of computer and TV in hotel room....

This isn't very creative, but what about all your disaster holiday stories?

Well, I took a wrond turn in in Tennessee at Cade's Cove, in the Smoky Mountains, and ended up in Cherokee, North Carolina. Then one time, we went to Orange Beach not too long after I had foot surgery. I went walking the beach early one morning, and had a bright beach towel on the balcony, so I could tell which was our hotel. Hubbo thought it would be hysterical to bring the towel in, and I walked and limped for nearly an hour before I went off the beach to the street, and got my bearings. I was nearly a mile away! I returned to the room nearly crying, limping, and in horrible pain, and hoped that hubbo wasn't worried too bad about me. He was asleep. And wasn't happy that I woke him up coming in.

My son got a job in Grand Canyon National Park, I had a sister out there so I followed him in my car. A real Hooptie!!! I should have known better, but it was great on gas. This was in 2000. This was my last child at home so I was bawling the whole time. The empty nest syndrome setting in.

On my return trip I was coming through Holbrook, Arizona when said hooptie car blew a head gasket. I had it towed to Scotty's Garage Where it was diagnosed and discovered it would cost more to fix than the car was worth. Oh what to do???

I took up residence in a motel, They only charged me $20 a night. The small cafe next door was great and was reasonable. I was returning with my supper to the room and was crossing a street when a man yelled at me and pointed across the street. I turned and looked and there was the biggest Dirt Devil I have ever seen. To late to get out of the way. Got dusted, skinned my knees, dropped my supper. Started crying again.

Called about air travel, would have to take a taxi to airport, a long distance. Was informed to be careful that a serial killer had recently killed a taxi driver.Changed my mind. What about a bus? Walk forever to the bus station to check it all out. Needless to say it scared me more than the serial killer. there were some really scary people there. Now keep in mind I was a correctional officer at a mens maximum security prison. I was not a scary kind of person, really kind tough. So that says a lot.

My Dh was working on finances on his end. But being on call at work, could not take off or leave.

Went to a washateria to wash clothes and saw an indian man sitting with his head in his hands crying. I went to him and asked if he were ok. He told me his daughter had been murdered recently and that while home on the reservation for her funeral, his small trailer that he lived in had burned. We were talking about God and he said his Bible was burned . I told him I would try to find him one. I looked in the Bible at the motel and found who had placed them there and called them and asked if they could donate or sell me one. I added that I had no way to come get it. No problem, we will bring it to you, there was no charge. I gave the bible to my new friend.

I attended the Indian Hoop dances that were held close by. Amazing! Nearly got in a fight with an indian woman who was begging for cigarrets in front of a store with a help wanted sign hanging in the window, I was short on patience and called that sign to her attention.

The wrecker driver said he wanted to buy my car for parts for his wifes car. So I walked to the Ford Place and asked about a cheap truck anything to get me back to Texas.....Wheeled and dealed on a new ford ranger had to overnight paperwork to DH for his signature. That took 3 days. Finally had the keys about 5:00pm decided to leave early the next day.

I was packing the truck to go home and my indian friend walked up and handed me a gift. It was a small turquoise ring. Such a kind gesture. I made it home safely after spending a week in Holbrook, Arizona.

A couple of years later DH and I went to visit my son. I wanted to spend the night in Holbrook so I could show DH the scenes of the crime...LOL! Little did I know that I would get a little catch in my heart of fondness for that little desert town.

Our plane was re-routed away from the airport one evening. By the time we landed, we'd missed our flight, (the last one of the evening), there were no hotel rooms, and the rental car agencies were closed. We spent the night in the airport, and had Starbucks for dinner.

Just recently, we had a fiasco of a vacation. My dad and sister had driven 6 hours to come see us, then we were to to drive another three hours to the beach to go deep sea fishing. The hotel cancelled at the last minute, and we were going to cancel the trip. However, the charter boat wouldn't let us cancel. We finally get a hotel room, get only a few hours sleep, rush through the 45 minute drive to the dock to find....tumbleweeds. No, not really, but no one was there. Turns out we can't cancel on the charter boat, but they sure can cancel on us.

We eventually found another boat, and they took us out on the spur of the moment. Had a blast, but what a mess in the beginning. Oh, and there was the time we drove up to our brother in law's cabin, only to find we had been given the wrong keys. There were no hotels anywhere, and no way in. All 5 of us had to spend the night in a small car. Yeah, and I have claustrophobia. That was really fun!

Took a vacation with husband's family (now ex-husband) to Disney World in Florida. But first we had to spend 3 days in Panama City Beach. My MIL was a real witch, all the time, and the vacation only brought the worst in her. The beach was boring after the first day, the motel room was filthy, my husband argued with his parents and his brother stayed drunk. I had a 4 year old son and a 9 month old daughter. It was mid summer and HOT. When we finally got to Disney World, the lines were long, tempers were short and the kids cried. My BIL left the park and went to the surburban and enjoyed the ice chest the rest of the day. We were going to stay several days, but my in-laws were fighting each other, my husband was fighting with them and they called vacation over. Then we had to drive from Florida to Texas in the suburban that became the bus of hatefulness. Brother-in-law stayed drunk all the way home trying to escape the fighting. I wished I could take his beer away and drink it all myself. The way my vacation went wrong was leaving home with the wackos to start with.

Made a 6 hour, total time, trip to Fernandino Beach in Fl. when the fuel pump went out in my wife's minivan. Oh boy! Overnight stay in the van with my wife, son, and three dogs. $650 later and the next day we and the van were back at the house in a tow truck. And to think, we took her van which was the more reliable one. HA!
