Queenslanders are being warned of a potential surge in Ross River Virus cases as mosquito numbers explode in the wake of wet weather.

Chief Health Officer John Gerrard says those in Mackay down to the state's south-east should be on alert and avoid being bitten by the insect.

A high numbers of mosquitoes tested from traps have been found to be carrying the virus, which in humans can cause fever, swollen, painful joints and a rash.

While most people recover in a few weeks, some experience pain and fatigue for months and there is no vaccine for the mosquito-borne virus.

Cases could surpass 2019-2020

Speaking from the Gold Coast, Dr Gerrard said there was a risk more Queenslanders could become infected than during the last surge in cases during 2019-20 when more than 3,000 people contracted the virus.

"Surveillance has detected a sharp rise in mosquitoes infected with Ross River Virus across multiple regions of Queensland," Dr Gerrard said.

"This leads us to predict that significant numbers of Queenslanders will be infected with the virus in the coming weeks. It is possible that even thousands of Queenslanders could be infected."

Of the 700 insects tested in recent weeks across the state, 31 returned positive results for the virus, according to Dr Gerrard.
