Canberra lashed by hail, rain as storm rolls through at peak hour​

Emergency services have been inundated with calls for assistance after a severe thunderstorm rolled through Canberra at peak hour this evening.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the capital earlier this evening, with parts of Canberra's north the worst hit.

More than 350 households across the inner north, Belconnen and Gungahlin lost power due to the storm, which lashed the capital just before 5pm this evening, according to Evoenergy.

By 6:30pm, the power had been restored to all households.

Severe thunderstorms also rolled over parts of New South Wales, with more than 10,000 people in Wagga Wagga and surrounding towns losing power.

Wind gusts of 120kph were recorded at Trangie west of Dubbo at 4:30pm, 106kph at Wagga Wagga just after 2pm and 113kph at Cabrumurra just before 3:30pm.

More than 10,000 people lost power in Wagga Wagga and surrounding towns on Wednesday afternoon.

In a text message sent to affected customers, Essential Energy said there had been "significant damage" to the electricity network.

Thousands are still without power in Mudgee, west of Batemans Bay, around Coonabarabran and Gulgong, while hundreds have been affected outside of Yass, around Cowra and near Walgett.

The NSW RFS said significant lightning activity and strong winds brought down trees, power lines and damaged roofs across the state.
