NSW flood threat this weekend as Sydney's weather endures coldest July day in decades​

Sydney is set for more heavy rain this weekend. (ABC News: Abbey Haberecht)

A cold and wet week across New South Wales will culminate this weekend in heavy rain, strong winds and powerful surf along the coast.

The stormy winter weather will result from a multi-centred coastal low developing in response to a broad polar air mass currently tracking slowly over eastern Australia.

The sub-Antarctic air has already produced the coldest July day in decades across parts of Sydney this week and could produce rare snow tomorrow on the ranges of northern NSW and far southern Queensland.

Bankstown, Sydney was the statistical stand-out — a high of just 11.2 degrees Celsius was the suburb's coldest July day in 35 years.

Numerous gang-gang cockatoos suffering from hypothermia have been rescued in the Victorian Alps.
Volunteers plan to release the birds in spring when weather conditions improve.

What next?​

Volunteer wildlife rescuers are urging the public to carry pillowcases to gently capture any grounded birds they see, and then call for help.

Wow it must really be miserable there if the native birds are affected so badly. Soon it will be Spring.


Meanwhile it’s cooled down considerably here, only got to about 22C today with bad smoky hazy air. Had a migraine all day, along with gritty eyes and hard to breath. More of the same tomorrow.

65F with a high of 76 predicted. Here yesterday's storms were not so bad - perhaps 2" of rain in an hour or so. Flooding was East and South of here with some places getting more than 5" or rain in an hour or so.
