A "very dangerous" storm has swept across south-east Queensland just before lunchtime on Christmas Eve, the second storm to hit the region in 12 hours.

Edit:The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) says storms are set to continue along the entire Australian east coast through to Boxing Day.

The BOM (says) the Queensland storm brought large hail down upon Dayboro and Burpengary, north of Brisbane.

Gatton, west of Ipswich, was battered by severe conditions again for a second time, after reports of hail up to eight centimetres during the previous night.

Energex has recorded about 151,000 lightning strikes across south-east Queensland in two hours.

By 1:30pm, more than 57,500 properties were without power across the south east, from Moreton Bay to the Gold Coast and further inland from Somerset to the Scenic Rim.

A storm cell stretching from the Darling Downs to northern New South Wales brought bringing heavy rain, strong winds and hail.
