Why outback sunrises and sunsets are spectacular in winter

If there's one thing country Queenslanders and tourists can agree on, it's that "there's nothing like an outback sunset or sunrise".

In the chilly winter months early risers are rewarded with a sky awash with vivid pinks, reds, and oranges.

The end of the day is no less special, as the sun lights the horizon ablaze.

It is one of the reasons backpacker Natalie Smith loves western Queensland.

"I went to the river a few nights ago to watch it and the range of colours is just unbelievable," she said.

"Pinks, purples, yellow, orange … it changes by the minute, it's just so beautiful."

In winter, sunlight is more likely to illuminate the cloud cover from underneath, creating a colourful glow.
