I had a hen hatch 8 chicks in a old roast pan last summer. The pan was being used for thier feed, until I found an egg in it. I put hay in it, moved it out of the way, left the egg, and she kept using it.

I dont free range because of a large preditor population, but before i put in proper laying boxes I found one egg outside of the coop unbroken. It had to have been kicked on the other side of the fence when they were playing.
