Hi, I'm new here. Heard about you folks from a co-worker. Turns out there are byc'ers all around me. Any way, I have a situation that I haven't found addressed anywhere else. I adopted 8 baby ringneck pheasants a little over a year ago. 5 females and 3 roosters. My boy "All That" killed the other 2 roosters and he has been a macho man ever since. By the way, pheasant hens lay a LOT of eggs. I got tired of collecting them and thought maybe someone would start setting. Someone did. But it's my rooster!! Tomarrow it will be a full week. He's very protective of his nest, pecking at the girls if they get too close. Every evening he gets up, eats and drinks, visits his girls, and lets the world know he's a macho man, then goes back to his nest. He has about 10 eggs.
I noticed that some of you have been raising pheasants for a lot of years and was wondering if you've seen this before. Will he keep it up and hatch them out? Will he raise them once they've hatched? I'm really baffled. I would love any input you have. I'm supposed to be gone on vacation about the time they would hatch. I've got 15 pheasant eggs in the incubator now that should be hatching out in about 4 days. I also have 16 assorted hens, 4 beautiful little black juniors I traded for pheasant eggs, and 2 americauna babies I hatched in my incubator last week. So cute. I've got plenty of experience with chickens, But these pheasants are a new wonder everyday. Every time "All That" sounds off I just grin. So if you have input about his behavior please let me know. Thanks
