The risk of leaving it as-is, is that it can rupture and well...everything falls out & they suffer a presumably horrific death. As the skin looks "angry" we dont have much time. We're thinking surgery given her age (1) and their long lifespan.

That is so awesome your going to let her have the surgery. Your right being she is only 1 she has a long life ahead of her.
