What's up with Purina???

Ever since Purina Mills was bought out by Land-o-Lakes the production quality has gone to the bottom of the barrel, quite literally. In an effort to "reduce costs" they changed the production (read Quality Control) standards that had been in place for many years when it was Purina. The closing of the smaller feed mills and consolidating into larger ones that were already near maximum capacity also has affected quality issues. Agway products are having similar issues since being bought by Southern States.

So basically we all need to look for stuff that isn't going to kill them. How about Pop Tarts?

Just kidding

Wow, I bought three bags of purina start and grow about 2 weeks ago. They were milled on May 12th, so they're fresh. Mine are nice and yellow, plus they smell really good (I know, I'm weird, lol). I had coupons for them, and that's the only reason I bought Purina, but I'm happy with what I recieved. I believe that one of the Purina mills is located in my state (not sure though), so it may just be a few mills that are running into problems instead of the whole company. I do wish that they would use seperate machinery for different types of feed though. I mean, sure, put all of the chicken food through the same machines, but don't run pig, cow, horse, or rabbit food through the same machines.

I normally buy chicken feed from a local grainery that uses oats and wheat as the base for their chicken feed. The feed is ground and bagged on site, since they have many people who bring in dump trucks and just fill the bed full of loose chicken feed. After the purina that I have runs out I'll probably just go back to feeding food from the mill.

Funny, I noticed the change and called Purina. They gave me the same run around about the "gates" thing.

I have since stopped doing any business with Purina. I'm tired of getting the run around with them. They need to treat their customers with more respect.

Got two bags of Flock raiser today - the first bag (the only one I opened) seemed fine to me.

I saw that all the feeds had gone up in price so I might as well stick with Purina since I get those Poultry Press coupons in every issue.

I bought a small supply of starter-grower ration from the store where I bought my day old chicks. The feed was finely ground with little pieces of corn in it. The chicks loved it and soon learned to pick out the corn and waste a lot of the rest. When I was about to run out of this feed I went to a Purina Feed dealer and bought a 50# bag of Start and Grow. When I opened it, I noticed that it looked more like crumbles and showed no evidence of any yellow corn. The chicks did not like it and still don't! I am sure the first feed I bought was from a mill located here in Arizona. It probably uses local suppliers and does custom mixes also. The more I deal with mega businesses like Purina and Walmart, the more inclined I am to go back to the local small businesses where customer satisfaction is still important!.

I want them again and I want the Poultry Press ones also but I couldn't find a way to request them on the Purina website:(

If I were you I would contact the company (Purina) normally the bag will have a phone number one where one it or look online for one. Be sure to have the bag near you as they may need the cereal number off of it.

The bag may have been recalled, or expired or something and they would know for sure. If anything you may be able to get a refund of a free bag or two by calling them.

My original email to the was on the 7th of June. Today, the 20th I received this reply:

Susanna, I am sorry for the delay in responding to your email. We fell behind when a person suddenlyleft our group, and are struggling to catch up. The color of feed can change a bit with age; so, checkthe date codes to see if you have fresh feed. If these clumps seem to be moldy, I certainly wouldn'tfeed this product. If you feel uncomfortable about feeding it at all, I would recommend returning it toyour Purina dealer for either replacement or your money back. In the mean time, the next time I bought chick starter just happened to be from our neighboring town, and it was totally fine. A few days ago, I bought it from our town again and both bags were bad again. I am calling them tomorrow and letting them know I will not be doing business with them again.
