A friend who knows me well, gave me a book by Jasper Fforde called "The Eyre Affair" So entertaining, I went and bought the next 4 Otherwise, I dig anything by Laurens Van Der Post, Jack Turner, Peter Matthiessen (I like to read Far Torguga once every couple of years) or Edith Wharton. A great read I recommend is North to the Night by Alvah Simon. A well-written adventure like this is a rare gem. I'm relishing the idea of finding new titles once I have a break from researching... would be decadent to crack open a good and proper novel. Oh to have another Harry Potter to look forward to *sigh* I read Lonesome Dove while stuck for a month in France (read more than that... but it stuck) The Alchemist opened my mind, and Marguerite Henry's "Black Gold" broke my heart. I could read Pride and Prejudice every couple of months, and Hamlet.
As for a book for a book's sake... more than the literature within - a few Christmases ago, my Father gave me a first edition book of the art and story of Alfred Munnings - it is a true treasure to me because my Dad had been looking for it for years, knowing my affection for Munnings' work, and missing the equine world. If the question is what is my favorite BOOK rather than story... then the answer for me is absolutely my Munnings book. I think of my Dad whenever I thumb through it.
I wish I could be as voracious a reader as Opa - time and eyesight are fading far far too soon.
