A friend who knows me well, gave me a book by Jasper Fforde called "The Eyre Affair" So entertaining, I went and bought the next 4 Otherwise, I dig anything by Laurens Van Der Post, Jack Turner, Peter Matthiessen (I like to read Far Torguga once every couple of years) or Edith Wharton. A great read I recommend is North to the Night by Alvah Simon. A well-written adventure like this is a rare gem. I'm relishing the idea of finding new titles once I have a break from researching... would be decadent to crack open a good and proper novel. Oh to have another Harry Potter to look forward to *sigh* I read Lonesome Dove while stuck for a month in France (read more than that... but it stuck) The Alchemist opened my mind, and Marguerite Henry's "Black Gold" broke my heart. I could read Pride and Prejudice every couple of months, and Hamlet.

As for a book for a book's sake... more than the literature within - a few Christmases ago, my Father gave me a first edition book of the art and story of Alfred Munnings - it is a true treasure to me because my Dad had been looking for it for years, knowing my affection for Munnings' work, and missing the equine world. If the question is what is my favorite BOOK rather than story... then the answer for me is absolutely my Munnings book. I think of my Dad whenever I thumb through it.

I wish I could be as voracious a reader as Opa - time and eyesight are fading far far too soon.

I recommend watership down, if oyu like adventure books. Even though it is animals. They have their own language, religion, and everything. Some of the views they have on females can be kind of touchy though.

I forgot about where the red fern grows. i will have to dig that one out and read it again. I always cried at the end. A couple more I remember reading are Sounder, Its like this cat, and Julie of the wolves. Also white fang, black beauty, and call of the wild are on my favrorites list too.

Its very well written to the point where oyu feel like you are there on the down with them. Each chapter starts off with some famous quote, like from shakespear, or from other famous writings. Each one foreshadows whats going to happen in that chapter. Thereis also some short stories of their folk hero Ela-hrairah told by a couple of the rabbits throughout the book. My favorite is the blessing of Elahriarah. Its about a band of male rabbits that set out to find a new home after theirs is destroyed.

Right now it is Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. I LOVED these books. I also really enjoyed Water for Elephants

When I was a teenager, my favourite book of all time was Papillon (the British publication/translation - I lost my copy and was given a North American Publicatino/translation and it really sucked).
