Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Hi every one. I am glad to see that there is a Wheaten Marans thread on here, as I tried the Marans Thread but they are more into Copper Marans.

Could you please give me some Helpful Criticism on my two 12 wk old French Wheaten Maran Pullets. (I hope they are not to young). I do plan on breeding them in a year or so and was just curious if they would make some nice offspring.
These are just some quick snaps I can get some more at a later date.

Could you also tell me about these French Wheaten Marans, do they look of good quality or just some average birds?. They are not my birds but are the parents of the 2 pullets I have above.
Keep in mind this is them after breeding season so they are not looking their best. And they are Australian so the standard may be different to the US.
This is the rooster. His tail does seem a bit high.

One of the hens. has the right colouring but seems to be kind of washed out or duller than usual FWM's.

The lady who I got the pullets off said her hens lay around a 6+ on the charts.

Hey guys... Long time no post for me!

Quick question: do any of you get broody Wheaties? I swear I read somewhere that the Marans in general didn't go broody. But I have a blue wheaten trying it now! I'm curious as to what kind of mothers they make.

I already have a crazy silkie trying to be a momma for the first time. I gave her some eggs to make her happy. Who knows what'll hatch but at least they aren't expensive eggs!

The Marans make good setting hens , I always use an incubator for all of my chicks as I vaccinate all of my chicks for mareks.

Thanks Snow bird. I don't know if I'll give her any eggs to hatch or not. But I have some swaps I need eggs for. When you only have 5 wheaten hens, and 1 goes broody... :-0

well, the hen looks a bit underweight compared to my birds, but it just may be the angle of the picture.
Also, my males don't have the leopard spotting that roo in the pic has on his back and his 'copper wedge' isn't very defined. Again, it may just be the picture.
He does have at least 5 points on his comb which is always good, and he looks very 'stout' (full figured) which is also good in my opinion.

cool thanks. His offspring (the 2 girls i have) are feathering out nicely, i hope they grow up well. She said they should lay 6+ so that's good.

Here in Europe at least, both BC and Wheaten Marans have gone broody on me. They do set well. But allowed to free range with the chicks they don't make the most aware and protective mothers from what I have experienced. If they are caged, I think they will do fine to show the chicks food and water, and keep them warm.

hey vc u havent been on here long time. a few of my Wheaton have gone broody and raised chicks the trouble is the other girls will kill them and eat them . so I separate them. finally my old rooster of almost 7 years that created most of my whole flock kicked the bucket. he has been going downhill for months but I wanted him to die with girls its nothing sad . he lived well . im going to place
a new roo with girls today and start test hatching next week
it's the end of an era. lol
