Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Pics
Hey Randy - Just looked at that picture again. Are you sure that isn't our current "bachelor" Roo? It looks like he's in the old brooder/marans area, and our other group of bachelors was in the tractor coop area. I don't remember having other males in that area close to other marans. Then again . . . the memory isn't what it used to be!

It
was less than a month ago. It would be great if he's still kickin' and has no freezer burn

You'd better listen to your little sis! The two of you need to get together and decide together before culling. Maybe get some red spiral bands to band the culls?? Even then, I'd watch them for a couple of weeks longer. These guys can change so much in a couple of weeks!!

thanks for the help and advice deb ,,,, i have leg bands on all the hens but as for ther roosters i never breed any roos except the origonal davis roo but i raised to age many last year and saved 5 or 6 roosters and picked one to keep as a back up so i realy had no reason to band 2 birds i will test breed him in a few weeks just to see what comes out but the way i see it is i will go backwards in egg color mabe if i use another roo.

Some people don't agree with this, but if they were mine I would use both males and breed father to daughter/mother to son.
BTW: I don't think you give yourself enough credit. You seem to have the eye that the old timers used before people went high tech with genetics. The main tail feathers in this male are probably wider than most Marans males......anywhere. They have exceptional width of feather. This is what you need to correct tail problems. That little bit of fluff is nothing.
