Some people don't agree with this, but if they were mine I would use both males and breed father to daughter/mother to son.
BTW: I don't think you give yourself enough credit. You seem to have the eye that the old timers used before people went high tech with genetics. The main tail feathers in this male are probably wider than most Marans males......anywhere. They have exceptional width of feather. This is what you need to correct tail problems. That little bit of fluff is nothing.

I agree with Walt and David about that tiny bit of fluff..I wouldn't give it any consideration at all. You do have a good eye for picking out your birds, they are beautiful! You just keep on keeping on with what you are doing Mister!!!!!!!!

You can still work on egg color as well at the same time but it is a much slower pace when working on all things at the same time. Example...I work with very small numbers of birds so this limits my flock diversity so out of many hatches and matings I may only end up with one or two birds worth keeping but then that also hinges on a long wait to see their first egg. If a bird has good type, feather color and acceptable egg color (at the very least a 4) I will breed them back to a rooster that I know has the dark egg gene and I will go from there. Sometimes it helps and others it is a complete waste of my time but I would never know if I didn't try it. Nothing to lose but I do gain another layer for the eating egg flock or a rooster for the freezer.

Well, it's not a whole flock, but it's a start! I just picked up a Wheaten Marans chick hatched by another BYCer out of Jeanette McGee eggs (Marans of MS), whaddya think guys? Sorry about the red brooder light, BTW.

This little one was hatched on the 15th, so she's 4 days old.
