Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Pics
Please read, Several weeks ago Bev Davis, stated not to use the present proposed standard and to use the French Standard for the Wheaten Marans until the proposed standard is completely redone. I believe they are working on the proposed standard at present.

I believe all the other proposed standards are only rough drafts and will change just like the BC standard did before it was accepted.

Bev, said they are trying to go with the French standards as close as they can on the upcoming revisions. Don

Maybe they should post something to that effect on the web site? "SOP still in progress"? Or maybe post the French standard until one for the USA becomes available? It gets tedious bouncing from one site to another trying to figure out what the birds should look like.

Illia ~ Beautiful birds as usual! Do your hens have the black primaries? Is the black supposed to show when the wings are held correctly, or are they hidden only to be seen when flapping? I am seeing some of both on the internet, just would like to know which is correct.

The APA will require the wing color be broken down in their description. (Fronts, bows and coverts, primaries and secondaries). They are still working on the Wheaten description. The APA will not accept a incomplete description.

Debbi, the wing primary black will not show unless the wing is opened. Will add that the outer edge of the wing feathers will be wheaten, accounting for why the wing has to open to see the black.

I can only relay what I hear as I am not in the group that is taking care of the proposed standard. Sorry

This is from a proposed serama wheaten hen standard:

WINGS: Fronts, Bows and Coverts - light creamy wheaten.
Primaries - outer web, medium shade of wheaten
Inner web - ashy wheaten stippled with brownish black.
Secondaries - outer web, wheaten, inner web, ashy wheaten shaded with
Brownish black

What I am about to post is just what I have observed with my wheaten. First the French site is very vague when talking about the wheaten Marans both male and female.

First thing to look for on the female is the main tail Black tinged with wheaten, if not then the wing will have very little black just like the tail. If the main tail is Black with wheaten tinged outer edge then the wing will be also. I believe there is a correlation between the tail and wing color.

Best description for the wheaten is the Blue wheaten Americana, just the part about the wings and tail. The wheaten female should have light flames in the hackle.

Main thing is I quess we will have to wait for the MCCUSA to come up with a standard. I sure would like to see the major faults and DQ's listed in the Marans color section. Don
