Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

If someone is bragging they better be prepared for questions about how many are in a class. Ribbons don't mean much to me. I just look them up in the APA yearbook to see if they have won anything significant and that tells you how many birds were in the class. If they won BB at some little fair, it will not be listed.

Walt

Walt, if the person winning is not a member of APA the winnings will not show up in the yearbook.

I know. Most serious breeders belong to the APA or ABA. Not 100% by any means, but to me a good indication if the breeder is serious or not.

Now, who has ordered eggs of Wheatens from bargain? Would love some customer feedback.

you should ask to see pictures of the offspring produced from their stock because fertility can change form week to week unless there is a big pen with loads of roosters with all time axcess

That is kind of what I was asking here, to see photos. Sorry, didn't make that quite clear.

Good questions Randy. People should also keep in mind that it only takes two (2) years for a respected line of chickens to go to pot if it is not managed well.

Walt

To be honest, Marans are not a breed that I am interested in breeding. I want pullets for laying and their beautiful egg color. Other breeds are saved for breeding. However, even with my layers, I do care that I have at least decent quality.

Hi Nick,
As Walt, Don and Randy mentioned, just because a person got stock from named breeders does not mean they have been able to maintain the birds to the SOP. (I know you know this)

Everyone is out to make a fortune breeding and selling the latest hot product. What amazes me is there is no guarantee as to fertility or relationship to the SOP, I understand the shipper can't guarantee how the package will be handled by USPS/FedEx.

Don't get me started.
