Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Hiyah! I know you will all be shocked, but I don't have the SOP memorized! Also shocking is my laziness in trying to look it up! just figured I'd ask here first and see if Randy or Don chipped in their 2 cents.

I have some beautiful pullets. But some of their combs have flopped over. Is this against SOP? I can tell which girls are lying though by the combs. I think any girls who are laying have a bent over comb. I have some other girls who really are on the sllloooowwww side of maturing, and their combs are still small.

flopppy combes is not a good thing but really the least of problems. young roosters comb slop over sometimes but sometimes stiffen up when they mature no pun intended also in my experience the slower maturing hens are the darkest egg layers couple of my girls have floppy comes but I think it's because the Roosters grabbing a hold of them and bending em over

Would it be possible to get a few pictures of the lopped comb on your wheaten females. The wheatem Marans have notoriously bad combs. They can have a slightly lopped comb if in egg production. If the Comb is lopped below the natural bend then it is a DQ. As long as anyone breed these real lopped comb females you will have a problem. This is just like anything else related to correcting faults on Poultry, There are things that have to be culled for if breeding to the SOP.

Is there anyone in Upstate NY with Wheaten or Blue Wheaten Marans. I am having a hard time locating some, and got 1 hen from 24 shipped eggs.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice, I will see if she has any information for me.

I was hoping to get 2 pullets or hens relatively locally. I think you are about 6.5 hours from me each way, and that is a bit of a hike. I will keep you in mind for the future for hatches if my quest to find a few hens falls through.

Hey guys,
I hope your first days of fall are going well.

I was doing some browsing and got a bit confused.  Can you folks tell me the difference between this:

and this:

the first link looks to me like Wheaton Maran's except the rooster looks more like a black copper. the second picture looks like poorly clored wheaten but not btb

Hello, I've been lurking around for a while. I have just a mixed flock of layer hens right now but have fallen in love with the wheaten marans and want to switch over to breeding wheatens. I just was given a wheaten splash rooster and reading through this thread made me understand that breeding him to reg wheatens would turn out %100 blue wheatens? I will most likely get a reg roo and hens in the spring. I want to breed the best I can but with keeping a smaller flock. I don't think I know how to post pics from my phone yet so the splash roo will have to wait till monday unless I figure it out. I would love to know if he'll work or if he should be dinner. Thanks.
