I have a broody hen with two chicks that regularly gets on top of a seven foot gate. With the chicks. I couldn't believe it either until I watched her do it. When they are done they all fly down. The chicks were two weeks old when she started doing this with them. I was scared the chicks would get hurt getting down but no they do just fine. This is her first time broody so I guess she doesn't know the rules.I raised my 1st 6 chicks inside ...always so careful about temperature water cleanliness and what i was feeding
now I have let a broody hatch eggs, I have seen mom tell and teach this chick what to eat and how to forage,.. let me just say mom isn't as picky as I was!! 3 weeks it eats everything mom does (I did change the flock feed to starter) Had them in the grow out pen but mom decided they wanted to be with the big girls...flew over a 4ft fence both mom and baby...still not sure how that happened lol!!
nature .... a wonder sometimes!!
gander007 i see your from Death Valley, when i was young the family and i would travel threw there to get to my grand parents house in Bishop Cali. I would love to see those chicks get on top of a seven foot fence lol.
