When checking eggs you are cooking....

Just the possibility that a hen had sat on it for a couple days or in extremely hot conditions like 90s/100s that would cause the embryo to start development.
I had that happen one hot summer when I didn't collect for a couple days.
Blood spots may not be pretty, but they are edible.
I usually crack them into a bowl first just in case since I don't want to ruin a recipe by dumping an embryo into a skillet of veggies.
Sometimes I look for the blastodisc to see if I'm getting fertile eggs.

I have had some eggs with blood in them. :sick Even though they are edible I prefer to just use a different egg.
You can use a spoon to dip out the blood spot if it bothers you. No reason to throw away the whole egg.
After all, it is being cooked most likely.
Blood is edible. There's a tribe in Africa that only consumes the blood and milk of their cow herds.

That's why we have immune systems.

I always crack mine in a separate dish first so it's easier to pick out a bit or bits of shell if they fall in. I never throw out the eggs with blood or meat spots! I know some people that are grossed out by it, though ;) I also like to see if they're fertile.

How do you know if they are fertile? (Fertilized?) My orp rooster isn't old enough, but I'm pretty sure my other hens had access to a rooster before I got them.

The only thing I've noticed so far is that almost every egg has a white spot....
