When do Maran's typically lay?

She is laying much more consistent now, getting eggs each day now. Yesterday's egg was another 3 yolker ! The egg was so big it did not fit into the carton ! Huge eggs. Wish I had a rooster to breed with her !

My 32 week old english maran girl is S-L-O-W-L-Y recovering from her case of mites. Still waiting for an egg, and it better be a nice chocolate one too! She's a wheaten- do they usually lay dark eggs? Black coppers lay the darkest, right? Also will it matter she's english standard?

I had been waiting, not so patiently, for my BCM to lay. I think the more I wanted it, the more she held that thing in LOL

She FINALLY laid her first egg at 26 and a half weeks. It's not super dark, but it's beautiful and covered in speckles

Next time I'll hatch my maran instead of buying from the store. Then I'll know the egg color. I was warned by the owner that not all the marans are laying dark chocolate eggs.

I'm okay with it. I'm happy I get an egg a day. She's a super layer! We need eggs so badly.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one waiting on eggs! My black copper marans is almost 7 months old and nothing yet. She has taken on the role of head rooster and crows daily. A lot of crowing.

This morning my husband let the big flock out and the juvies were still in their coop. They require more set up outside and he doesn't normally deal with that as it's normally me who takes care of the chickens. Well, she crowed and then crowed some more. For twenty minutes. Crowed until I went outside and let the juvies out. She stood at the corner of her pen and theirs and watched me let them out and hasn't crowed since. Apparently she takes her job seriously. Our oldest cockeral is a few months younger than her, and a bantam. She is training him, I swear. He was out there squeaking too.

Has anyone encountered this? Will she ever lay an egg or will she just crow her behind off instead??

On the other hand, she is a total character and likes people and is good with the other pullets. The crowing is getting old though. She also tends to be rather vocal in general. She makes this loud growling purring sound when she's happy or getting treats. She's really funny.

Wow, I never experienced that before, a crowing hen. I've heard of that happening. I once had a hen that never laid. It was over a year before I realized she was an internal layer. She was a hatchery Wyandotte. When we culled her, she had about 20 full sized what looked like cooked yolks in her. She was on the nest everyday like she was laying and I never got an egg.

At 7 months, I'd wait yet. I hope you get your eggs.

My maran is one of the sweetest hens ever. She's a great flyer too! She roosts so high that I need a ladder to get her down. She has laid everyday since she started! Either she has all these yolks stored from being a later layer or she's a strong layer.

a crowing hen? Are you sure she is a her lol. Mine laid at around 5 1/2 months,
Very large very dark eggs, she is a copper maran.

I think so.. here she is. She looks terrible at the moment as she is just finishing up molting. I hope this means that the eggs will start soon, but I dunno.

Please excuse the foggy photos. It's been raining cats and dogs here all day and is more than a bit balmy.

That is a rooster. There are saddle feathers. Sorry about that, you won't be getting any eggs from him.
