When it rains do your chickens go into their coops?

We have a coop 4x16 and a portable coop 4x160with rain protection on top and a tractor 10x20 covered half way with rain protection. All the work for nothing. Our chickens free range from around 9 a.m til 8 p.m. They may pass through the portables now and then when I am not using them for smaller chickens, but when it rains they are out in it until it gets piss pouring. Then most of them just go under anything they can hide under til it lets up. My RIRs love the rain actually.

Question for you free rangers....
how do you now what your birds do in the pouring rain...are you out there in it too?!

My coop is 30 feet from my house. I can see all of their pen through windows.
All the sheltered areas I mentioned when they free range can also be seen from inside my house, except under the deck. I have seen them under it during a storm when I was outside. GC

I live in TX. The hens free range in the day. They’re always close to the coop during rain, seeking shelter but never in the coop unless it’s also very very dark. They just sit in horse stalls or under overhangs or under trailers for the most part during rain.

When they are out during free range time and it starts raining they just head for whatever cover is close. Usually they head for the old covered cow feeder or to the underbrush beneath the willow trees we have around the seasonal stream. Rarely do they return to the coop. If they are still locked in the run they will go into the coop or the covered part of the run.

Sometimes, checking on whatever needs checking on. <G>
The area around the house is fairly open. Most of the area the chickens use is visible from windows in various parts of the house. Both hominids who live here "work" from home; that makes it easy to keep track of the critters, both domestic and not.
The coop and run are about 25 feet from the mudroom door, 35 feet from the nearest edge of the deck.
The chickens like to be near or under the deck if there is an alarm, or for siesta.

As for the OP question: Yes, they stay out in the rain and/or snow. They don't seem to mind any degree of precipitation. If it is flat out pouring they will sometimes take cover under the deck or a juniper tree.
What they take issue with is wind...combined with moisture, or in deep Winter, the wind all by itself. When the wind is high (gusting to +20 mph or steady at a little less than that), yes, they go to the coop/run and stay put until it subsides.
Otherwise, they are out and about, being birds.
This is a very arid climate. When there is moisture the creeepy crawlies surface. That seems to keep the chickens and other birds busy.
