When will my chickens start laying, when do I change their food

I was afraid they would get them all poopy before they actually start laying. I have the Eaton Pet and pasture nesting pads and they are kinda spendy lol.

Put some pine shaving in the boxes until they start to lay.

A much cheaper (aka free) option - save up your feed bags and fold them to snugly fit the bottom of the nests. If you have a few sheets of bubble wrap you can put those inside the feed bags before folding. Nesting material on top, but even if they kick most of it out the feed bags will still provide padding. If they get soiled you can just toss them, guilt free.
