When will my pullets start laying? They hatched in late May. They are a white leghorn, easter egger (Americauna and RIR) and a white leghorn RIR mix.

I got my group all around the end of March. I still haven't had any eggs. I cleaned out their area and put a few golf balls in there. Hopefully soon I'll have eggs.

The average age is usually six months although many start before that and some later. Often when the daylight hours decrease the pullets take a little longer to lay, I've found. If you know the age their relatives laid, their mothers, sisters from an older clutch or even the relatives from the father's line that can give you clues. Another clue is if their combs have turned more of a red shade and they have started squatting when you pet them or for a rooster.
I have some that hatched the first week in May and some of their combs are turning and I've even caught one or two checking out the nest boxes so I'm hoping soon, especially since some of my older hens thought this would be a good time to molt and stop laying.

I have eleven pullets hatched April 11, four have red combs, at least one is laying, I am getting three eggs a week, I am going to try and hatch Middle March next spring, I think I might not get eggs from all of them until March when the days get longer, I don't want to use lights.

Three years ago I hatched a clutch February 19. First pullet laid at four months five days old and all were laying by 4.5 months. They had the same father (who was from an early laying line) and four different mothers. The mothers had all started laying at the six month mark.
