Where can I learn how to knit?

Deb, I am the only one in my family that can't knit or crochet. This is mainly due to the fact that I am also the only right handed person in my family; both parents, four sisters and a brother all lefties. I swear I'm adopted but they say no.
I found a Knifty Knitter kit at walmart. It's a set of looms. Not quite as good as actually knitting, but I've made some pretty impressive afghans with it.

I learned how to cast on from a friend but I didn't like the technique, so went to youtube and now use this technique:

A friend taught me to knit, I taught myself how to purl (which is knitting in reserve) and I also taught myself how to knit continental style (your hands never leave the needles).

There are lots of techniques to cast on & youtube is a great resource.

Read www.yarnharlot.com - you'll love her, Deb!

I have bought a couple of knitting books, including the Vogue quick reference (which is fantastic) and "Knit & Purl", a stitch dictionary.

I also taught myself from a booklet, a little how-to put out by Red Heart many, many, many years ago. Learned crocheting the same way. For me, casting on is still the hard part, I can never remember how, had to look it up on line once when I misplaced my booklet. (That's when I found out there is more than one way to cast on!)

I even taught myself some of the fancier stitches from books.

You can do it, too!!!

This is the site that taught me to knit. I had no prior experience. I highly, highly recommend it. Their videos and explanations are first-rate!
