Where/how do you store your feed?

I do this too, but make sure you seal the drain in a chest freezer on the bottom. I did not and had ants overtake the inside of the freezer from a tiny gap in that drain.

I think mine must be really old, there is no hole on the inside anywhere for a drain lol. I love this way to store feed though, and recommend to anyone who has the space!

I'm also a metal trash can user. Larger cans are in the garage for feed storage. For the actual feeder I keep a small can outside under a roof overhang to protect it from rain (as the lid does have tiny holes near the handles) that fits a 7 lb feeder perfectly.

I'm lucky in that my coop is part of a large shed, so I store the feed can in the shed out of the weather. I've always used a metal can, knowing that mice can chew thru anything else.

I keep mine in old chest freezers that have quit. Mouse proof and they hold a lot. The one I use for chicken feed is a 15cu ft freezer and it holds 600 lbs.

If you're going to use the metal trash can, make sure you seal up where the handle connects to the lid if it is going to be in the weather. It will leak and make your feed go bad. I just took the handle off and hot glued the slits.

Not only do I use metal trash cans for chicken feed and scratch, I also use them for the wild bird and squirrel feeds. One each for peanuts, BOSS, corn; and generic bird seed. I did spray a can of Flex-Seal on the lids that are on the cans that sit outside. I've never had a leaking lid or contaminated feed.

I washed out a few cat litter bins and use those. Usually I can fit 40 lb bag of feed plus 20 lbs of seed (in 2 of them). They're in the kitchen underneath the cupboard. I was thinking about getting storage bins that have locking handles and putting the feed in the shed. I was waiting until springtime to do that.

I have always stored me feed (horse) in metal trash cans. They will rust out at the bottom if they are on dirt. I have one currently on cement that gets wet sometimes and it seems ok, and I stored them on wood for a long time and they were fine, the one on dirt though just fell apart. I have had issues with raccoons figuring out how to open them, so I just took some bailing twine and tied to the handle on one side, ran it under the handle on the lid and tied or snapped the other end to the other side handle when not using them, that stopped them from getting into them completely.

I use galvanized bins like above but keep it in the garage. Your profile says Berkshires... So you also need to think about black bear of you leave it outside.

I saw one walking through my backyard last year in October. Thankfully, it didn't upset my chicken coop!

The only problem with totes for me is they'll scratch them and try to chew through it (The rats and mice)
