I do have a few local customers for seramas and I have had better luck selling the "culls" as tiny pet bantams on Craigslist or some other type of ad.
Most people want something little and cute and are not interested in true breeding and these are the people that I can sell to with out having to mention the word "serama". I also use Yahoo! Freecycle or Cheapcycle, Hoobly etc etc
Not many people here are aware of Seramas. Most of my customers are from all over the US and I find them or they find me on the internet. Seramas are more popular with those that have computers and can stay connected with the breed info, other breeders and like minded-potential customers...
I do ship whenever someone is interested and willing to pay for it. I dont charge extra for shipping, and I dont mind the hassle of doing it to get the birds homes.
If you are going to breed though, you have to be prepared to really cull the birds if you dont have the space. I
t can fill up quickly and you are always going to find a time where you are having to keep too many birds in order to find them homes....or you will find that people want pairs or trios and you get stuck with extra roosters.
It takes a lot of your time to advertise these extra birds, and find them homes, unless you take them to a swap and give them away.
I can keep them for extended periods of time, because I have a farm and lots of space, and am soft-hearted.
Really, in the big picture, it doesn't make a lot of sense to keep and feed and raise these birds so that you can give them away or make 5 bucks on them as a novelty pet. The smart thing is to cull what you cant sell and not spend all your time and money feeding them.
That being said, I have 5 extra roos here that I feed that are either for sale, or too pretty to cull, or are "on hold" until I hatch a hen to sell to them in the fall..
