12 miles from cooperstown... A 30 Acre farm with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms for $139,000

That is about 1/4 of what my house is worth in the UK! (after conversion to UK pounds) And my house is no palace, just a cheap house aimed at 1st time buyers...

At that price I could probably just about afford to rent my current house out (in case I don't like the USA) and buy a farm over there and make my dream come true!

Incredible how come these places arn't snapped up by city dwellers at these prices?

That seems to be the problem in the UK at the moment, because land is short all the rich people in the cities are buying up the houses in the cheaper areas and it is so annoying to watch locally born people being forced out of their homes and moving away...

Pennsylvania has some beautiful areas, some are still very rural (like us

), and property values are good. $400,000 would buy you a decent patch of land out around our parts, not that anyone is selling, though. We got our 13 acres with well and electric service for $30,000. No joke.

We live on a gravel road, no cable TV, an 1/8 of a mile driveway, you can't even see our house from the road.

I love it. After living in Phoenix, AZ for 7 years, I need the peace and quiet.

Good luck with you decision. I have a dear friend who is a transplant from your part of the world. She lives a little closer to civilization, but loves west central Pennsylvania.

Dear Offspring from UK: (on a serious note)
Before I started reading all the posts from North Carolinians, my first reaction to your question was: North Carolina! I've lived in the northeast all my life, and it always seemed that NC had the best of everything - GORGEOUS coastline on the east, nice cities with good economic status and jobs in the middle, and wonderful mountains in the western part of the state. And the people are so nice. And they talk nice, not loud like northeasterners.

Another good suggestion was upstate NY (at LEAST three hours north of NYC) if you can stand the winters. I wouldn't recommend my state, Massachusetts, because of high taxes, high land prices and embedded corrupt politics.

The coastline of New Hampshire is small but supposed to be beautiful, as is Maine.

On a less serious note, please don't mind those North Carolina chicken-lovers who wrote in. Southern28Chick is just mad because all her hens aren't laying yet, soap takes too long to be ready for all the shipping she's going to have to do, and the fact that all of us love her - THAT's got to be a pain!

DH says if we don't have a dozen by tomorrow morning then he's going to buy DOM DOM DOM store bought eggs.

I have 3 laying and 7 (eggs) in the frig so I might have 10 by the end of the day.​

NEW HAMPSHIRE is gorgeous and still has that rural flavor that you crave. Most people here are crunchy and 'private' with their lives and families. I've enjoyed living in and around New Englanders...and love that they respect a person's boundaries. AT first...it took some getting used to. When we first moved into our house...our neighbors did not come over for a year. They joked when they came over and said, "Well we BROKE down and finally came over...guess you folks are going to stay!"

STAY away from Manchester ~ Nashua Very high crime rates. Concord is the capital and still has a home town feel despite its a large city (plus its the only state capital who still holds legislature in the same building it started in very historical)...Lebanon/Hanover is very nice with Dartmouth College there (I usually feel like I'm in VT when over that way). Keene is also a very nice family oriented area...very rural...home prices are reasonable...they have a great Pumpkin Festival. White Mountains area is really just a place to go visit...not many jobs or industry there. The seacoast is nice also...albiet small.
Winters are longer...but less than upstate NY with their lake effect snow (lived in Niagara Falls/Buffalo area for 4 years). Fall my favorite time of year and reason I'll probably NEVER leave New England.
Spring is MUD Season...snow melting = MUD
Summers are gorgeous and mild...hardly every topping 100 degrees. (born and raised in Texas...so this is WELCOME believe me)
I truly love it...we snow shoe, ski, tube, hike, and work hard. Work Ethic here is very different from other areas in of the US...people here in NE are very hard workers. Some other areas of interest are POLITICS...we get every presidential candidate and political parties coming here to strum the folks here because New Hampshire is the First primary...kind of interesting to be able to see Hillary, Bill, Bush (both he and Senior), Obama was just here last week.
Maple sugaring is a favorite of my husbands and mine...very interesting to go to the Maple Sugar Farms. NH is nice because you are in between VT and Maine which are 2 polar opposites...and if there was a 3rd pole....NH would be there if you get what I mean! Maine is very nice and the seacoast is beautiful with all the lighthouses and history. Although the beaches are nice...its a bit too cold to swim in...and probably will warm up for about 15 mintues in August to swim in. Just this summer...a teenage girl went swimming in June and died of hypothermia!

Just read BuffHooligan's post and I had to add...NH does not have a state tax and all schools are funded by property tax. School systems are wavering and in poor condition...so if you have kids...stick to real estate in better school districts. Your taxes will be more...BUT it is worth it believe me! NOW...with no state taxes...you need to know about the 'ugly' side of NH. There are MANY anti tax groups and the state legislatures are required to take the oath which states that they will NEVER raise taxes. So...I gave you the bad too!

New Joisey has alot to offer: corrupt politicians, highest property taxes, too many people, traffic problems, lots of commuters going into the city (NY), beautiful stretch of coastline, and a very beautiful pinelands that believe it or not is one of the most pristine almost anywhere, oh and did I mention corrupt politicians? Or is that everywhere?
