In Texas, houses (not trailers) are built with brick exterior. My folks (architects) say its a necessity with the high summer temps., and the humidity, to ensure that your Air Conditioning functions. Also keeps the mold at bay. However, according to them, there are other parts of the country where the climate doesn't make brick housing as essential. For example, in Arizona, stucco works wonderfully for keeping out the heat, and keeping in the warmth in winter. But stucco molds and crumbles in high humididity. In other places, wood exterior works.
Type of house depends on the region of the US; the history and development of that area, and the climate of that area.
Nobody likes the weather in Texas, but I have to put in a good word for it anyway. (its home ;-) ) Move to Texas! lots of land, no state income tax (only sales tax), beautiful pine forests in eastern Tx, lots of lakes, and few laws telling you what you can and can't do.
Actually, I'd like to move to NZ.
