Hi, I was wondering if anybody can tell me which duck breed we have. The ducklings are now approximately 5 weeks old.

Our ducks are now 4.5 months. Since they aren't really developing caruncles yet, we wonder if they might be mule ducks. We'd love to hear what you think!

thanks for your reply!
We bought them as two males by the way (but of course this doesn't have to be right). The sound they make also doesn't sound like the muscovy sounds I come across online. They still chirp a lot, so maybe they are a bit too young to say anything about that.

If anyone has any ideas, let me know. We are very curious...

yes, I did read about that. One of the two is slightly smaller than the other. In addition, the behavior is also different. The larger one is a bit quieter and more focused on us. The smaller one can fly better, is more active and a better swimmer. The big one is the only one I've heard make a hissing sound so far. But maybe they just have very unique characters.
If one of them is female, we have to buy more females in the spring. I can live with that:cool:

I had a Pekin that I loved dearly but she drove me nearly to drink with loud incessant quacking. I couldn’t hear you babies’ noises but if they are quacking a lot, I’d guess Pekin.
It’s funny you say that. We have the opposite problem. Our Pekin girl has never made a peep. We didn’t even know she was female until she started laying eggs. Our Silver Appleyard, on the other hand, has not shut up since the moment we got her. Friends of ours have an obnoxious Rouen. Makes me think more and more that Muscovies are the way to go if you ever want a moment of peace.

Thanks for your message. We also have this suspicion when we compare them with 'purebred' photos. Not only the missing caruncles but also the body shape seems a bit different to us. But these are our first ducks, so we don't know much about it...
I'll try to make a video and upload it.

We don't like them any less when it's a mix, it just makes us curious😉

Haha ok interesting. So the most likely is a muscovy/mallard mix. From what I've read, the muscovy pekin cross is common. Considering the color it seems like a good option.

At the end, it doesn't really matter what they are, they're still cute. We don't want to breed with them, we just have them for company...
But secretly we're glad they won't develop huge caruncles.☺️
