I'm partial to Barred Rocks. Friendly, pretty good layers of large brown eggs, and they don't have feathers on their feet. (I'm not too keen on picking up a chicken with chicken poop stuck to their feathers.)

I don't think wyandottes have come up yet! Thanks for the new information Karen!!!!It's probably been stated several times by now. I haven't read the whole thread . orpingtons and wyandottes both are gentle, docile, good with kids, handle extremes in temperature well, and lay a lot of eggs . Have a wide gene pool with no inbreeding problems and lots of breeders who know what they're doing. buy your chicks from somebody who's been breeding them from a while.
