What's a good "beginner" breed? Im looking to get chickens in a year or two. I'd like something that is a pretty good pet, but also lays. I live in Ohio, so something that tolerates the weather- if that makes a difference.

How many should I get too? I have about an acre of land, I plan to fence off most of it. I guess I need an idea of "how many" so I have an idea of how big of a coop I need to plan for.

Orpingtons are a good breed. They tend to be calm and gentle.

Get half as many as you think you want, and then build the coop three times larger. So if you want 20 chickens, buy 10, but make the coop big enough for 30. Eventually, your addiction will fully set in, and you will be glad you did.

You could try buff orpingtons, easter eggers, delawares, and brahmas.

Please understand no one passes chicken math.

Get Delawares - super friendly- several of my hens will hop in my lap, and they are good egg layers. Whatever you get, try to get from a breeder, however.

Next we will teach you about chicken math.
