There is a kid series called kids eyewitness or something like that,

I guess it depends on how deep you get into it. There are a lot of lessons about trust, betrayal and courage without getting into the nasty details.

Series about historical US events from a kids perspective. I was reshelving them in our library and the Donner party one caught me off guard.
"San Francisco Earthquake...Trail of Tears...Dusbowl...Oregon Trail...Pearl Harbor...Donner Party...........Donner party?! for children?! Who thought that was ok?!
The Dear America books?
I read a lot of those when I was a kid.

That's true 😅 that's basicly any historical book.

I can't be sure, I read a few dear America's too.

Most of history is gritty but needed. I don't think kids should be sheltered (to a degree) from death but cannibalism might be a bit much. Of course I was the 13 year old thst read War books instead of horse stories....so I'm a bit warped.

Gotta hand it to those Lost Genetation writers. Sure know how to bring the party down.

Oh yeah! Thirteen y.o. love death and gore and all that juicy stuff. When I taught 8th grade, I would look specifically for that in novels to keep em interested.

Very true. When I was doing 1st person historical reenactments (1699 to Vietnam) my card read, "Tell it like it was." Someone said recently 'History is not ours to change but to learn from.'
Having said that, I DO have a pet peeve about trying to tell kids inappropriate things at too young an age. But with a little thought it's not hard to craft the story for them without changing the lessons.
